sacred sites
Sacred sites around the world are often tourist attractions. People flock to see them whether they subscribe to the religion associated with them or not. There must be something about them that draws us in.
Pagan Sacred Sites
A sacred site isn’t always attached to a religion. Often they are more “pagan” in nature, and are part of the landscape. What are we getting from these places that makes us seek them out?
Well-known Sacred Sites
Here are some of the more well-known sacred places; St.Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul and the Taj Mahal in India; the standing stones at Stonehenge in England and the healing sanctuary of Lourdes located in the French Pyrenees; and last but not least, the amazing Buddhist temples in the Far East.
There are incredible cathedrals at Cologne and Aachen in Germany, at Chartres and Paris in France, and at Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
I could go on, so this list is far from exhaustive.
Sacred Sites in Nature
Individual mountains and whole mountain ranges are sometimes regarded as sacred. Ancient trees and woodlands are often regarded as sacred. Water sources, including wells, are also looked upon as sacred.
Once upon a time, mother earth, and all her bounty, was regarded as sacred. We honoured whatever it was that we took from the land in order to maintain our physical survival. We only took what we needed. Oh, how we have lost something important. How we need to get back to treating mother earth with the respect she deserves.
